Q: 為什麼介系詞後的動詞要加ing

A: 介系詞後面只能加「名詞」。

Ex: There is a pencil on "the table."

Ex: Can you pass the salt to "me"?

Ex: The oil can keep the umbrella from "water."

當介系詞後要加動詞時，為了使其符合「介系詞後只能加名詞」這條規則，就必須將動詞後加上ing，使其成為動名詞(Ving)的形式。

Ex: The heavy rain yesterday kept me from "leaving" school.

　　(from後原來要加動詞leave，將leave改寫為動名詞leaving以符合規則。)

Ex: Are you having any problem with "doing" your homework?

　　(with後原來要加動詞do，將do改寫為動名詞doing以符合規則。)
